FAQ

Why do I need PR?

You poured your heart and soul into making your album — now it’s time to make sure people hear it. A successful music marketing campaign typically includes:

  1. Public Relations
  2. Radio and Spotify promotion
  3. Social media marketing
  4. Concert dates
  5. Advertising and retail marketing

Let’s focus on public relations and why investing in PR is essential for creating awareness, elevating your profile, and reaching potential fans, ticket buyers, and merch customers.

What exactly does a publicist do?

A publicist creates and executes a strategic PR campaign designed to publicize your album and elevate your visibility. This includes:

  • Targeting music and entertainment trades, consumer media, lifestyle outlets, and genre-specific markets (jazz, R&B, new age, world music, Americana, etc.)
  • Writing and distributing press releases to print, broadcast, and online media
  • Curating a custom media target list and servicing your album to those outlets
  • Pitching for features, interviews, reviews, premieres, broadcast performances, and roundup inclusion
  • Acting as your media spokesperson when needed
  • Handling media inquiries and scheduling interviews
  • Pursuing tour publicity to support your concert dates
  • Consulting on PR, marketing, promotions, social media, and branding
  • Gathering and delivering press clippings of all secured coverage

In short: a publicist tells your story in a way that gets attention — and results.

I’m not sure that I have a budget to hire a publicist. Do I really need one?

If you don’t already have a massive built-in audience, hiring a publicist is one of the most effective ways to break through the noise. Media outlets receive hundreds of pitches and new albums every week. Without a respected publicist advocating for you, your chances of securing meaningful coverage are extremely limited.

A skilled publicist knows how to position your story, pitch the right outlets, and generate the visibility that leads to fans, streams, ticket sales, and long-term growth.

I’m only releasing a single now. Do I still need a publicist?

Yes. While a single press release isn’t a full PR campaign, it does generate awareness and media coverage. A well-crafted press release can also serve as:

  • A one-sheet for radio promotion
  • Website and social media content
  • A newsletter announcement to your fanbase
  • An artist bio, especially for emerging artists

For many artists, a press release is the first step in building a consistent media presence.

How do publicists get paid? When should I start?

Publicists typically work on a monthly retainer. In niche markets, PR campaigns generally range from $500 to $2,500 per month, with a standard three-month minimum. Ideally, campaigns begin 2–3 months before your album release.

For standalone single announcements, the fee is $500, and the press release should be written and distributed close to the release date.
